Thomas Heger is the main character of the novel ›Journey into Disaster‹ and a German engineer who has been spending his holidays in the Philippines for years and was arrested there. He helps poor families and their children with education. His age is in his late 40s. In Germany, he has a life partner and is permanently employed by a company. His family is very close to him. He has many friends in Germany and the Philippines. Joy de vivre and generosity characterize him.

Sabine is Thomas Heger’s younger sister. She lives near her parents and does everything so that Heger is quickly released.

Marie is Thomas Heger’s life partner. She lives in Germany, is mentally unstable, and has a steady job. She is convinced of Heger’s innocence.

Police Superintendent Ma’am Papillo is the second main character in the novel. She leads the investigation against Thomas Heger, is around 35 years old, very attractive, has hardly any private life, a little daughter, and her chic Rolex is broken.

Ma’am Tolisan is around 40 years old and a detective (a female police investigator). She is Ma’am Papillo’s right-hand man and admires her boss.

CIDG policeman Villanova is Heger’s arresting officer.

Officer Sarang is a nice police officer at police station number one in Tugalm City. He does not believe that Heger is guilty and facilitates Heger’s stay at the police station.

Officer Pangutana is a police officer at police station number one in Tugalm City. He does not believe that Heger is guilty and facilitates Heger’s stay at the police station.

Ma’am Solano, almost 60 years old, and a social worker in the BSWD. She is Heger’s fiercest opponent and tries to capitalize as much as possible on Heger’s story.

BSWD is the Bureau of Social Welfare and Development (BSWD)

Ma’am Burque is a young social worker in the BSWD. She has a good hand with children.

Juan B. Sala, almost 60 years old, is the Head of the Bureau of Social Welfare and Development (BSWD). Tugalm City and Ma’am Solano’s boss.

Ronald Pagut, almost 55 years old, is the Head of the Bureau of Social Welfare and Development (BSWD). Sendong City, and a cousin of Ernesto Restito.

Franco Taslig, a teenager, is Heger’s foster son. His father Adon is already deceased. He is supported by Heger in his studies. Unfortunately, Franco is not always completely honest.

Adon is Franco’s father, a brother of Marie-Ann, Romolo, Wilfredo, and Richard Tasig, and an uncle of Aboy, Silas, Mikel-Loy, and Marielou. He is already deceased.

Marielou is a pretty, sweet teenager. She is supported by Heger in her studies. She also lives in the small village, which is located directly by the sea. Her father is a fisherman. Marielou fights for Thomas Heger and does everything so that he is quickly released from jail.

Janeth and Wilfredo Taslig are Marielou’s parents.

Wilfredo is the father of Marielou, husband of Janeth and uncle of Aboy, Silas and Franco. a brother of Adon, Marie-Ann, Romolo, and Richard Tasig. He is a fisherman.

Lydia Barcella (her nickname is Lang) is the wife of Matthew and the mother of Jan and Dan. She is around 35 years old, like her husband. The two sons are supposed victims of Heger and are in the youth home.

Family Taslig
Grandpa and Grandma Taslig. Sons of them are Wilfredo, Romolo, Adun (deceased) and Richard. Daughter is Marie-Ann. Marie-Ann ist the mother of Vicente. Wilfredo the father of Marielou. Adun the father of Franco, Romolo the father of Aboy.

Romolo Taslig Senior is the father of Romolo Taslig Jr. (Aboy), one of the five boys in the youth home and an alleged victim of Heger. Romolo has a lot of physical suffering. Like all parents, it stands by Heger. He is also called Romo and is a fisherman.

Silas is the older brother of Romolo Taslig Jr. (Aboy). The teenager is convinced of Heger’s innocence and was supported by Heger at school.

Vicente Kabaltos, who is around 30 years old, is married to Michael Kabaltos (Mik). Her son is Philipp Kabaltos (Phil). He is one of the five boys in the youth home and an alleged victim of Heger. Like all parents, she stands by Heger.

Michael Kabaltos, whose nickname is Mik, is around 35 years old and married to Vicente Kabaltos. His son is Philipp Kabaltos (Phil). He is one of the five boys in the youth home and an alleged victim of Heger. Like all parents, he stands by Heger.

During Heger’s stay at the police station, Mik becomes one of Heger’s best friends and also Heger’s errand boy. He likes gambling and is a chain smoker. He doesn’t have a steady job.

Marie-Ann Tanio is the mother of Vicente Tanio Kabaltos, a sister of Romolo, Adon, Wilfredo, and Richard.

Commander Tanio was the father of Vicente Tanio Kabaltos and was suspected of having been a commander of the NPA. He was shot dead during a police operation. Vicente was only four years old at the time.

NPA means ›New People’s Army» (communist rebels in the Philippines).

Rica Restito, who is around 55 years old, is the mother of Samuel Restito (Sam). Her husband is Ernesto Restito. Sam is one of the five boys in the youth home and an alleged victim of Heger.

Ernesto Restito, who is around 55 years old, is the father of Samuel Restito (Sam). His wife is Rica Restito. Sam is one of the five boys in the youth home and an alleged victim of Heger. Ernesto is a fisherman and crew leader.

Alvin is the older brother of Samuel (Sam) Restito.

Jonathan is the older brother of Sam Restito. The teenager is convinced of Heger’s innocence and was supported by Heger at school.

Silvia is the older sister of Samuel (Sam) Restito. She lives with her family in Tugalm City.

Kagawad Jacub Castro is around 45 years old. Kagawad means village leader or district mayor. He is a person of respect, as his title, Kagawad, indicates. Heger and he have been best friends for a long time. He, too, stands by Heger and is convinced of his innocence. He owns a fruit stand in the market of Sendong City and is married, like all Filipinos.

Attorney De Baron is around 45 years old. He is a lazy attorney. He was Heger’s first attorney, but he does not work correctly and costs Heger a lot of money. Heger dismissed him. Heger’s first wrong decision De Baron is located in Tugalm City.

Attorney Tensung has Japanese roots and is Heger’s second attorney. He is about 50 years old and lives in the city of Sendong.

Attorney Paternesto is an elderly attorney from Sendong City and a cousin of Ernesto Restito. His offer to take over the case was too high for Thomas Heger.

Sir Escandor is the chief prosecutor in Tugalm City.

Wolfgang Schmidt, a German, is around 55 years old and the managing director of an electrical goods store in Sendong City. He helps Heger and manages his money, which Heger’s German family transfers to the Philippines.

Frank Matschulat, a German, is about 48 years old, which is a bit strange. He owns the house in the village, which is idyllically situated at an estuary by the sea. Heger rents this house every year for about four weeks to spend his holidays there.

Suzette (Suzi) Zambrano, a beautiful and sexy TV reporter at ABC-PTV broadcasting company in Tugalm City

Sir Steiner, half German and half Filipino, is managing director of the ABC-PTV broadcasting company in Tugalm City.

Pastor Jack is the pastor of a born-again church in Tugalm City, where Franco Taslig is also a member. Jack is a nickname. No one can remember his Chinese name, let alone pronounce it. The daily struggle for survival, alcohol, and cigarettes have left their mark on him. He tries to get Heger’s money through fraud.

Mickey is the black dog of Heger’s parents.

Mikel-Loy is a teenager and a cousin of Silas, Aboy, Aboy, Marielou and Franco. The teenager is convinced of Heger’s innocence and was supported by Heger at school.

Dodung is the leader of the three street boys. They are also called »rugbyboys,« after the glue called »Rugby« that they sniff.

Bernie is one of the three street boys. They are also called »rugbyboys,« after the glue called »Rugby« that they sniff.

Albert, is a boy in the youth home, comes from a broken family. He stayed there only temporarily. His brother Kyle is with him.

Author

Høeg was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Before becoming a writer, he worked variously as a sailor, ballet dancer and actor (in addition to fencing and mountaineering)—experiences that he uses in his novels. He studied literature at the University of Copenhagen under Peter Brask, a Danish literary scholar, composer and author. After a personal crisis, he spent a year working as a sailor on wealthy people’s yachts,[2] before returning to graduate with a Master of Arts in Literature from the University of Copenhagen in 1984.
